John Schembury, Senior Education Executive

Investment. How do we invest in the professional development that participants receive? Too often, professional development is a one-size-fits-all, lowest common denominator, sitting down and getting participants to review relevant data, define individual and collective areas for growth, prioritize initiatives (1-3) that target the growth area, and then analyze impact. Therefore, I am not a fan of “one and done” trainings, but rather, a huge proponent of ongoing PD in the form of revolving professional learning communities (PLCs) and affiliate networks.

My professional development word for 2023 is “pronunciation.”

By definition, articulation means expressing immediately, clearly, and effectively.

In everything we do, we must find the words to express our intentions with the power to believe in ourselves.

The first question in any job interview is, “Tell me about yourself.” You will be asked to do this. Your answer will set the tone for the rest of the interview. Many job seekers are puzzled by this question. You must be able to “articulate” a persuasive and illuminating response.

A picture can be worth a thousand words and you can have an amazing visual presentation. But with that graphic, you need to be able to communicate and understand what you’re trying to convey to a visual audience.

In 2023, I will work on my “pronunciation” skills.

Michael Willis 18+ years of experience working with accounting & sports organizations and managed $10M – $125M+ P&Ls with $3M-$50M+ budgets. He worked for the NFL for 22 1/2 years, working primarily on the financial/accounting side of the business with game officials.

“Commitment.” Doing the best I can in any given moment, trying to be “better” and letting go of what I can’t control.

why Well, I am forever looking for practical methods to become more effective. So, I saw it recently Stutz On Netflix. This is a documentary directed by Jonah Hill about his therapist Phil Stutz.

Phil and fellow practitioner Barry Mitchell have written two books: tools And Coming alive. I started reading recently.

There were many nuggets in the book that made me sit up and take notice, not least this quote:

“The reason you don’t commit to anything is because it hurts you so much if it fails. Success means putting everything on the line and if it doesn’t work, doing it again. And again. No blame. No excuses.”

So, here’s to real “commitment” and “success” in 2023…

My Development Vision for Connection 2023!

Our offices play an important role in our lives. Work affects both our physical and mental well-being in good and bad ways. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the connection between work and well-being into sharp focus. According to the Surgeon General’s 2022, Workplace Mental Health and Well Being Report, one of the biggest challenges we face in 2022 (and beyond) is connection and community.

Connection is essential to human well-being. Connection is a basic human need, and people who feel a strong connection with others are happier, healthier, and more resilient!

One of the most important ways connection can help fight loneliness and isolation. When we feel connected to others, we feel less alone and more supported. It is very important in stressful or difficult times as it provides security and comfort.

Connection is what makes us feel seen, heard and valued. When we share our thoughts, feelings, and experiences with others and they respond with understanding and empathy, it helps us feel understood and accepted. This is especially important for people who feel marginalized or excluded in some way.

Most important to me, connection plays a vital role in our ability to learn and grow. When we connect with others, we have the opportunity to gain new perspectives and insights and learn from others’ experiences. It helps us develop new skills, knowledge and understanding that are valuable for personal and professional growth.

Finally, it is a key factor in our ability to experience joy, love, and belonging. When we feel connected to others, we can experience deep and meaningful relationships that bring us fulfillment and purpose. This is especially important for people who are struggling to find meaning or purpose in their lives.

My 2023 vision is intentional. In the past, I tried to do everything, but I realized that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t do everything. There is a quote by Andrew Benintendi: “You work hard. You are going to do well. You can’t really let the past or the day before – whether you had a good day or a bad day – dictate the day you have that particular day. A few things happened during the pandemic that really hit home for me. Everything happens for a reason and only worry about what you can control.

There are always more personal/professional opportunities than I can physically handle. I’ve learned that I have to be intentional and prioritize and constantly re-prioritize what’s important and what’s not—every day matters. I can’t do it all and that’s okay (and I’m getting better at accepting that). I continue to be more intentional about what I plan and accomplish.

For 2023, I am focused on abundance. Abundance in five professional areas: Connections, Fulfillment, Wealth, Success and Happiness. I have worked to clearly define what this means to me in each of these five areas. For an abundance of professional connections, I’m looking to grow my social media network by 40% in 2023, for example. I made a detailed plan of what it would take to achieve it. To grow my social media network by 40%, I post 2-3 times a week on LinkedIn, TikTok and Instagram and connect with 100+ new people a week. I track each week, making it easy to measure my ongoing progress and success.

I think it’s important to keep the purpose of my word, the abundance, if I can, every day, focused, motivated and driven towards my goal, which increases the probability of achieving it.

I know some things come easy, but for other things, depending on how big they are, I have to work at them. I have to deal with busyness, distraction, intimidation and fear. Being persistent and motivated is key to staying committed. But my goal is to focus on the outcome of abundance.
